The Commonwealth Ports Authority Ports Police Department, formerly known as Airport Security Department, has been tasked to maintain safety and security at the airports and seaports of the CNMI, comprised of many highly trained individuals. With the Special Response Team, recently created due to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the other hard-working officers in the Ports Police Department, they will continue to do their best to keep the traveling public feeling safe and protected.
CPA's Ports Police Office is responsible for the security access system at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport. This office includes the duties of conducting SIDA training to all airport employees applying for security badges, FBI fingerprinting background checks for all badge applicants and processing of said badges. They are also responsible for monitoring the airport with strategically positioned surveillance cameras.
This system was originally designed in 1993 and was operational by 1995. To comply with FAA and other Federal requirements, CPA upgraded the system in 2004. The upgraded system and a new badging office was completed with the addition to the installation of cameras around the entire airport terminals.
