CPA has completed its 1,000 linear foot extension to the Rota Runway and will now begin the work on the runway shoulders, replacement of edge lights, and installation of generator. This project should be completed within nine months from the notice to proceed.
On January 16, 2006, CPA issued the official notice to proceed for the Runway Extension Phase I project to OKP (CNMI) Corporation. The project includes the extension of 1,000 feet of the runway and a turnaround at each runway end, grooving, pavement marking, striping, lighting, runway guidance signs and security fence installation. The total project costs are estimated to approximately $10 million, with funds provided by an FAA Grant and the U.S. Department of Interior through the CNMI’s 702/CIP program. A pre-final inspection was conducted on June 4, 2007 and completion is anticipated shortly.
CPA is now awaiting additional funding from the FAA for Phase II of the project, which includes providing paved shoulders for both sides of the existing runway, providing new electrical conduits and new edge lighting, providing a new generator and fuel tank and construction of a generator room.
In January 2006, CPA awarded the construction of a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint to the company of Pacific Cooperation Limited for a cost of $90,000. The project was completed in May and TSA officially began operating the checkpoint on May 15, 2006.
In August 2006, CPA awarded the construction of a tourist visitors’ center to DK Brothers. The tourist center consists of a cement board partition, finish woodwork construction, painting and electrical works and was funded by funds from the Rota Delegation. The project cost $18,000 and was completed in October 2006.
